Review: nc-mac-asl’s blog: Netflix InstantWatch Titles with English Subtitles

Subtitle in action on Netflix software

Meet Mike Chapman, he’s a sign language interpreter for over 22 years. His wife is hard of hearing; she’s a teacher assistant at a local deaf school. They absolutely love watching movies on Netflix with subtitles. Once they joined the program and saw subtitles had been added to the Wii a couple of months ago, Chapman suddenly started getting an idea. He scanned nearly 500 titles on Wii search to see which movies that has subtitles. He combined several sources into one page such as twitter feeds and Netflix’s database. He runs nc-mac-asl’s blog: Netflix InstantWatch Titles with English Subtitles.

In my opinion, Chapman is a genius. His idea is way ahead of Netfllix’s development team by creating the site for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing only. Right now, there is no way you can search to show subtitles only filter on Netflix’s website. Shame on them. I actually took my time and browsed throughout Chapman’s site. So far, only 411 titles are accounted for that only has subtitles.  That’s a relief… a very good thing.  Chapman also claimed that his website includes 383 Subtitled, 3 listed as Subtitled but don’t work, 1 Silent Movie, & 24 popular/highly-rated foreign titles with Open Subtitles.

His page does not refresh automatically with new titles with subtitles (it would be nice if it does automatically add new titles). He checks both InstantWatcher and FeedFliks websites every night, those websites seem to refresh their listings overnight. This is where Chapman comes in, he had to have insert new titles onto his blog by hand. Kudos to him!

Home Site

Movie Listings with Subtitle

While the interface on the website is nice but it is a long way down to browse one title that you like. I wish there’s a search bar where you can type in a movie’s title or a TV show’s name and it would appear if the content has subtitles. Alternatively, I found out an easier way to do this is to use Find function in the web browser. I simply pressed Crtl + F and then type in the movie name, it should be able to show up the name, if it’s there on the site. I wonder if there is anyone willing to make a Web App for an iPhone or for the Android platform? That would be awesome.

Overall, Netflix InstantWatch Titles with English Subtitles is a great start; although I will be looking forward for some GUI (Graphic User Interface) changes and improvements on movies/tv shows’ titles searching function. It is good to hear that Chapman posts his updates in the Comments section of his blog, so regular users can easily scan for newly added titles.

Audience, what do you think of this site? Is it useful to you? Drop your thought on the comment below.

I give this a 4 out of 5 stars. Great work Chapman!
